Inspiration Statement
Having recognized the awesome potential, beauty, and talent in Sudanese women, our vision is to encourage women to reach for their dreams and empower them to become all they can be. We truly enjoy the opportunity to influence young women, providing them with the much-needed opportunities to advance and grow in both their personal and professional lives. The Miss Sudan Beauty Pageant was created to provide the tools and guidance to these women so they can successfully advance to the next stage of their lives or careers. Our intention is for this program to be a springboard into modeling, fashion, or other industries.
We would one day like to provide funding for post secondary education, but at this time the funding has not become available. If you or anyone you know would like to help us, please don't hesitate to contact our organization to volunteer. Thank you for your interest in our organization and we hope your future is bright!
Founder Information
Yar Kang, founder of the Miss Sudan Organization and Miss Sudan Beauty Pageant, grew up in The Republic of Sudan (a region torn by civil war for most of its existence). War claimed the lives of her father and brother, and caused her to lose track of many of her family members. Her dream was to pursue a professional modeling career, but she struggled to find work in Sudan. At eighteen, she entered the Miss Africa beauty pageant and finished in the top five. A few years later, she was working in Cairo as a babysitter and modeling on the side; separated from her family as a result of the war in Sudan. While in the U.S., Yar received word that her mother was alive and staying in Kenya. Yar made the long trip back to Africa to be reunited with her mother. She has since returned and is living in Sioux Falls where the Miss Sudan Beauty Pageant is now held.

Yar has spoken at schools and colleges, attended rallies and worked for non-profit groups in order to raise Americans' awareness of Southern Sudan and women's rights. She has a passion for the Sudanese and identifies with their struggle. Yar believes that, with financial support, she can truly make a positive difference in the lives of Sudanese women and children. She believes that education is the foundation of that change.
One day, Yar hopes to create a center for African people to gather, receive education & career opportunities, plus partake in cultural and recreational activities. "The kids need somewhere to go," she says. Yar speaks of the many elements that would directly benefit not only Africans living in the United States, but U.S. born citizens as well.
