Dr. Kermit Staggers
Kermit Staggers joined the City Council in 2002 after serving eight years in the South Dakota State Senate. Re-elected to the Council in 2006, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Siouxland Heritage Museums and is a member of the Urbanized Development Committee. He also serves on the Land Use (chair) and Public Services committees of the City Council.
A Professor of History and Political Science at the University of Sioux Falls, he received his Ph.D. in American History from the Claremont Graduate University (California). He also has a Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies from the Sioux Falls Seminary. In 2001 Dr. Staggers received a Fulbright Lectureship at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and the National University Kiev-Mohyla Academy (Kiev, Ukraine) where he taught courses on American government and modern globalization. He has also taught for the University of Maryland in Spain and Germany. Dr. Staggers has served as president of the Great Plains Political Science Association and has contributed scholarly articles to journals and books.
Kermit and his wife June have two children, Ayn Kristen and Kyle Lee (Peace Corps Volunteer in Africa), son-in-law Aaron and two grandsons, Elijah and Matthew. Kermit is an Eagle Scout and a former Air Force Intelligence Officer (Captain). He enjoys traveling to foreign countries, classical ballet, and reading books on history, government, and economics. He is listed in Who's Who in America.
